One of the therapies I’ve embraced lately is a simple, yet powerful habit: telling myself “Pele” (Sorry).

For someone like me, who lives with chronic pain, this practice has become a daily act of self-empathy. I say to myself, “Sorry, Titilayo, you need a hug,” and offer words of comfort like “Pele Titilayo, Pele Oko mi.” When I stub my toe, I tell myself sorry. When lupus flares up, I whisper, “Pele, my dear, sotigbo…”

In every situation, I am intentional about being gentle and compassionate with myself. Yes, I have a great support system that always has my back, but I also recognize that people are human—they can get tired or overwhelmed.

Instead of waiting for external validation, I validate myself first. I tell myself sorry when I am exhausted, when I feel pain, or when life feels heavy. It’s a small, daily ritual that reminds me: I deserve my own kindness and care.

Tip for fellow warriors: Don’t rely solely on others for empathy. Learn to give yourself the love and validation you need. It’s transformative.
